Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, condemned Israeli action against Palestinians.PETALING JAYA: Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei have called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and de-escalation of the situation which has seen scores of civilians killed and injured.
The joint statement by the leaders of the three countries called for a temporary international presence to monitor the ceasefire and urged the United Nations to take quick action.
Separately, a group of NGOs in Malaysia urged Putrajaya to drop its backing for a proposed two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The two-state solution was part of the joint statement by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Indonesian President Joko Widodo and the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
The leaders had urged the international community “to remain resolute in their commitment to safeguarding the ‘two-state solution’ towards achieving an independent State of Palestine”. The two-state solution calls for the co-existence of Israel and the Palestinian state, based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
However, a group of 31 Muslim NGOs said Putrajaya should revise its policy towards Israel and stop supporting the two-state solution. They said such a solution was no longer viable as Israel’s actions and policies towards Palestinians amounted to apartheid.
The joint statement by Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei condemned Israeli attacks against civilians, and urged the United Nations Security Council to act urgently to guarantee the safety and protection of the Palestinian civilians throughout the occupied territories.
The three leaders also called for an emergency UN General Assembly to come up with a resolution to end “the atrocities against the Palestinian people”.
The Muslim NGOs said Putrajaya should revise its policy towards Israel to be identical to that adopted in the past for apartheid South Africa.
The NGOs said three international bodies including the UN Economic and Social Commission on West Asia, had declared Israel an apartheid state.
“Talk of (the two-state solution) remains alive only to serve as empty rhetoric for the hypocritical western governments and media,” they said. - FMT
