Malaysia Backs Iranian Drone Attack On Israel
Anwar Ibrahim said Israel should not aggravate an already extremely tense situation in the Middle East. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has backed Iran’s decision to launch a drone attack on Israel in response to the attack on the Islamic republic’s embassy in Damascus.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the attack by Iran as a “legitimate act” to the “barbarous” attack by Tel Aviv.
In a statement, Anwar also said the government was pleased to note the assurances given by the Iranian government that barring another attack by Israel, the drone attack would be its only reaction.
“We join all of the civilised world to urge the Zionist Israeli regime not to aggravate an already extremely tense situation.
“There are clear signs indicating that the world has no desire to see a worsening of the situation.”
The statement was issued following a special meeting by the National Security Council to discuss the grave situation in the Middle East.
Anwar said the impact of the Middle East situation on the Malaysian economy has been minimal so far, with the Kuala Lumpur stock market opening slightly lower, which reflected regional trends.
The government will, however, continue to monitor this situation and take proactive measures to ensure the security, welfare and well-being of all Malaysians.
“The interests of the country will be our primary consideration,” he said.
Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel on Saturday, in retaliation to an Israeli strike on its Damascus consulate on April 1 that killed seven officers, including two senior commanders.
An Israeli army spokesman said Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel, injuring at least 12 people. - FMT
