Born on July 10, 1925. Mahathir hails from Malaysia's Muslim ethnic Malay majority. He is the youngest of nine children. His father was a school headmaster in the northern state of Kedah.A former doctor, Mahathir has been in politics for more than 70 years. Known for being outspoken, his acerbic, blunt style has at times upset his own people as well as foreign leaders.He championed the economic empowerment of the Malays, which some say may have come at a cost for Malaysia's Chinese and Indian ethnic minorities.His first stint from 1981 to 2003 made him Malaysia's longest-serving prime minister.
