Macc Did Not Ask Najib About Rm9 5mil Payout To Shafee Court Told
Shafee Abdullah is on trial on four counts of money laundering involving RM9.5 million received from Najib Razak. (Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer told the High Court in lawyer Shafee Abdullah’s RM9.5 million money laundering trial that investigators did not record Najib Razak’s statement on the purpose of the payment.
Farid Jabar said this under cross-examination by defence counsel Harvinderjit Singh.
“You did not ask the former prime minister why the RM9.5 million payment was made?” Harvinderjit asked.
Farid affirmed that he did not do so.
The court was previously told that Shafee received RM9.5 million from Najib at the latter’s office on two occasions, in September 2013 and February 2014.
Shafee is on trial on four counts of money laundering involving the amount.
The prosecution alleges that he breached Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla) by receiving proceeds from unlawful activities as well as making inaccurate statements to the Inland Revenue Board for the 2013 and 2014 assessment years.
To another question from Harvinderjit on whether the witness was aware that the RM9.5 million payment was initially raised by Anwar Ibrahim, Farid said he did not know.
Anwar previously filed a lawsuit to question his Sodomy 2 conviction. He alleged that Shafee had received RM9.5 million from Najib in 2013 to lead the prosecution team in the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court.
Anwar was sentenced to five years in prison, and subsequently received a royal pardon.
The hearing continues on May 12 before Judge Jamil Hussin. - FMT
