Macc Cops In Joint Probe On Four German 1mdb Linked Bugattis
Malaysian authorities are cooperating to verify information regarding four Bugatti Veyron cars confiscated by the German police earlier this week from a private storage facility in Munich, believed to be in connection with the 1MDB scandal.
Berita Harian reported the ongoing cooperation between MACC and Royal Malaysia Police, as confirmed by Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.
“Whatever help is needed, the police are ready to assist,” Razarudin said.
Separately, Free Malaysia Today quoted MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki as saying that the anti-graft agency had first reached out to German authorities in October 2022, with queries on purchases of luxury cars using 1MDB funds.
“Following this latest development, MACC has sent a request for updated information from the German authorities,” he said today.
MACC chief commissioner Azam BakiAzam also said the MACC had first sent a mutual legal assistance (MLA) request to Switzerland for information on frozen assets related to the 1MDB scandal in November 2020.
Police raid
On Thursday, Berlin-based newspaper Bild reported that a team of German police raided an underground garage in northern Munich and confiscated four luxury Bugatti cars, estimated to be worth several million euros.
The four Bugattis are identified as the Rembrandt Veyron, Black Bess, Jean-Pierre Wimille and Meo Constantini editions.
According to the Bild, both the Munich Police Headquarters and the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Bern, Switzerland, had declined to provide any information on the matter.
However, the report also quoted judicial sources who revealed that the confiscation of cars is connected to a larger probe on 1MDB.
The MACC's cooperation with authorities in various countries has over the last several years recovered various assets bought with 1MDB funds and returned over RM20 billion to the Malaysian government. - Mkini
