Perlis Infrastructure and Public Transport Committee chairman Izizam Ibrahim said that checks showed that the terminal operator had recently appointed a new company to handle the containers.
"However, the machinery provided by the new company could not cater to the container volume, resulting in service disruption at the terminal since 2am today. Operations are still ongoing but at a slow pace. We expect the situation will improve as more machinery arrives at the terminal to handle the containers," he said when contacted today.
Izizam added that the incident was not caused by a protest involving lorry drivers from Thailand as circulated on social media. "It is an operational issue and has nothing to do with drivers picketing," he said.
Pictures and videos of lorries transporting various goods from Thailand stranded at the Padang Besar Container Terminal next to the Padang Besar railway station have been circulating on social media platforms since early today.
It was alleged that the incident was caused by lorry drivers from Thailand refusing to come to work out of protest against their employer. - NST
