Loke Backs Sim As Dap Leader Eyes Early Exit

ENTERING his second term as DAP secretary-general, Anthony Loke Siew Fook plans to retire at 55 after three terms, stepping down by 2031 without seeking other party roles like national chairperson or CEC member.
In a Malaysiakini podcast recorded April 8, 2025, and released April 19, Loke emphasised retiring at his peak, inspired by Teng Chang Khim’s exit strategy.
At 48, he aims to lead DAP through two general elections, defending 40 parliamentary seats and implementing bold reforms, including candidate selection improvements with expert input. His third term, if secured, will focus on further reforms before handing over to the next generation.
“My view is that political leaders, especially those in top positions within the party or government, should decide for themselves when it’s time to step down, rather than leaving it to others.
“I want to retire at my peak – not wait until people no longer want me. That’s not how I intend to go. I want to decide my own path and political journey,” he said.
Timeline:
2022: Elected DAP secretary-general.2025: Begins second term, aged 48.2028: Faces next general election, influencing party elections.2031: Completes third term, retires at 54 before turning 55.Meanwhile, it appears that Loke has thought of everything in his early retirement plans.
He has reassigned Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong from organising secretary to deputy secretary-general, framing it as a strategic move for Sim’s growth, not a demotion.
In the podcast, Loke called Sim a key next-generation leader but noted party concerns about his smooth career.
As Penang DAP chief, Sim faces a two-year test to unite the faction-riven state chapter. “I want you to have a longer runway,” Loke said. Success could elevate Sim’s career; failure risks derailment amid ongoing party reforms. — Focus Malaysia
