Local Chicken Egg Production Exceeding Demand Says Govt

It said the supply of chicken eggs was now sufficient and stable, and that the industry would regularly review and adjust open market retail prices based on current production data following the restructuring of egg subsidies effective Aug 1.
“This price adjustment process is part of the open market mechanism, but it does not affect the assurance of egg supply for consumers,” the ministry said in a statement on Facebook today.
The ministry said surveys found that Grade A, B and C egg supplies remained stable and available in supermarkets, while affordable special grade eggs were also being supplied in reasonable quantities.
“The ministry will continue monitoring egg production data and maintaining the Agro Madani Sales initiative to help ease the people’s cost of living,” it said.
The ministry also said the domestic trade and cost of living ministry was continuously monitoring prices, and that stern action would be taken in cases of profiteering, manipulation or unreasonable price hikes.
On May 1, Putrajaya ended price controls on chicken eggs and reduced subsidies from 10 sen to five sen per egg.
It said the average price of a Grade B egg was significantly lower than that of Malaysia’s regional neighbours.
On July 31, the ministry said industry players had agreed to introduce a special grade of chicken eggs that would be more affordable, to come at no cost to the government as it did not involve subsidies. - FMT
