Lawmaker Criticises Pas Leader For Improper Use Of Malay In Parliament

(nst) : Kepong Member of Parliament Lim Lip Eng has criticised Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang for his improper use of the Malay language in Parliament, questioning his commitment to upholding the national language.
In a statement today, Lim acknowledged Hadi’s recognition of the importance of the Malay language but highlighted the irony of advocating for it while failing to use it correctly.
“What is the point of talking about the dignity of the language if its leaders themselves cannot use it properly?” Lim said.
His comments came in response to Hadi’s statement in Parliament yesterday, in which the Pas leader referred to a gathering of white people as consisting of only three ‘ekor’.
“Since when are humans counted using the classifier ‘ekor’? This is basic kindergarten-level Bahasa Melayu — ‘orang’ is used for humans, while ‘ekor’ is for animals,” Lim said.
He also questioned whether Hadi had skipped grammar lessons as a child or deliberately used the term to insult others.
“If this was a mistake, it is embarrassing for someone who claims to champion the Malay language.
If intentional, then it is even more serious – it reflects not just ignorance of the language but also an arrogant and racist attitude that should not exist in Parliament,” Lim added.
The DAP lawmaker challenged Pas to clarify its stance on the matter. “Does Pas agree with their president’s statement? Is this the level of language and decorum they teach their supporters?”
Lim stressed that as the leader of a major political party, Hadi should set a positive example rather than turning Parliament into a platform for racial insults.
“If he truly wants to champion the Malay language, he should start by using it correctly and with respect,” Lim said.
