Kl Folk Warn Dbkl Minister Of Court Action Over Flood Mitigation Plans

(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Several Kuala Lumpur residents will take Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim to court in five days if information on its flood mitigation plans are not forthcoming.
Led by former Bersih chief Ambiga Sreenevasan, the residents served a letter through their lawyers to Shahidan to request updates on flood mitigation measures DBKL had promised the auditor-general that it would carry out this year.
The residents said they would take the matter to court if DBKL and the minister failed to respond in five days.
Last month, the national audit department published a report which highlighted several failures on the part of DBKL to carry out flood mitigation projects proposed in its own flood master plan, the residents said in a statement.

In the report, the auditor-general concluded that only eight out of 104 flood mitigation measures proposed in DBKL’s flood master plan had been implemented or were in the process of implementation, they said.
DBKL’s response to the auditor-general was that another 22 flood mitigation measures would be implemented this year.
The residents said the auditor-general had also identified five short-term mitigation measures in the DBKL flood master plan which had yet to be implemented in the flood-prone area encompassing Jalan Tun Razak, Persiaran Ampang Hilir and Jalan U-Thant as of March.
They said transparency on this matter was crucial for a recurring issue like floods, adding that there had been loss of lives, livelihoods and properties in the past.
The residents are represented by lawyer Lim Wei Jiet.
Last week, environment and water minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man reportedly said the government was rolling out a RM300 million flood mitigation project in Kuala Lumpur to prepare for seasonal floods in the coming months. - FMT
