Kj Sounds Early Warning Over Rising Klang Valley Covid 19 Hospitalisations
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has sounded warning bells about a rising trend in Covid-19 patients getting hospitalised in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya after state borders reopened on Oct 11.
The same situation is occurring in Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan as well, especially for Covid-19 patients in Categories 3, 4 and 5, he said.
“The conclusion is that the Health Ministry is looking at some of the leading indicators and in several states including Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, they are showing a rather concerning trend of hospitalisations.
“This matter is within our attention and we will continue monitoring it closely,” Khairy said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
However, he denied that the government would consider reinstating the ban on interstate travel due to the increase in hospitalisations.
“For now, there are no plans to reinstate the interstate travel ban. We just gave the freedom and this is part of what we mean when we said we have to learn to live in this Covid-19 world,” he said.
Khairy explained that the situation has not deteriorated to the point where the healthcare system is in danger of becoming paralysed.
This announcement is to serve as an early warning, he said.
“If we wait until the system is paralysed to give a warning, that is too late already. We have to give an early warning that the leading indicators are not that good,” he said.
Khairy also noted that Sarawak, Kelantan and Selangor are still showing bed usage capacity at above 60 percent whereas Penang and Perak are still above 50 percent.
However, the usage of beds and ventilators nationwide continue to show signs of recovery, he said.
“The number of beds allocated to treat Covid-19 cases has begun to be reduced in phases.
“At the national level, the number of Covid-19 patients who are treated at health facilities is decreasing from week to week,” he said. - Mkini
