DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang believed that Najib Abdul Razak can help Malaysia's image by renouncing any ambitions to return as prime minister.
In a statement, Lim said it was the appropriate thing to do in the wake of a recent speech by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong where His Majesty described corruption as a "cancer that can ruin civilisations".
"The most proper, honourable, and patriotic thing former prime minister Najib Razak could do is to renounce any political comeback as prime minister to save the country from any global embarrassment.
"Will Najib do that and will the BN comprising Umno, MCA, and MIC, declare they will never name Najib as a future prime minister of Malaysia?" asked Lim.
Officially, Umno's top leadership has endorsed Ismail Sabri Yaakob as their candidate for prime minister.
However, the Federal Constitution states that the Agong has to appoint a prime minister based on His Majesty's opinion of who commands the majority support of MPs.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, who is also the chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), speaking on corruption at the institution's 93rd convocation ceremony in Shah Alam, Selangor on Tuesday (June 14).Najib has never publicly announced another run for the premiership. However, he remains a highly prominent BN figure and regularly draws large crowds whenever he was on the stump.
This was despite damning allegations of improprieties and guilty verdicts emerging from his money laundering trials involving government-owned companies SRC International and 1MDB. - Mkini
