Kit Siang Denies Lam Thye S Allegation Didn T Ask To Vacate Bkt Bintang
DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has denied betraying his former party comrade Lee Lam Thye in the lead-up to the 1990 general election.
This is after Lee claimed in his memoirs that his decision to quit DAP 32 years ago was prompted by attempts to push him out of the Bukit Bintang constituency where he served as MP for four terms.
Lim (above) in a statement today, said it was a big lie.
"This is a big lie for I never told Lee he would not be contesting the Bukit Bintang constituency, and the thought of Lee contesting in any seat apart from Bukit Bintang had never occurred to me before the 1990 general election," he said.
He added that to this day, he does not know the real reason Lee quit politics in 1990.
According to Lee, he was told by DAP leadership that they had identified a candidate to replace him in Bukit Bintang, prior to his decision to quit the party.
This turned out later to be former MCA candidate Wee Choo Keong - who would also fall out of favour with the DAP leadership in 1998.
According to Lee, the move to push him to another unidentified seat was because his "non-belligerent" style of politics did not sit well with the party leadership.
It has been reported that Lim was among those he came into conflict with.
However, Lim claimed he found the former Bukit Bintang MP's style complementary to his own.
Lee Lam ThyeHe cited a recording of his speech at a DAP event in Batu Pahat, Johor, a day after Lee announced his retirement from politics.
"There had been a long-standing attempt to create splits and divisions between us because of our different political styles, but I have always regarded our different political styles as mutually complementary, and that the DAP is what it is today because of the sum total of our different political styles," he had said.
Lim also reportedly said then that he tried repeatedly to convince Lee to stay in DAP, but failed to do so. - Mkini
