Kit Siang Can Start Worrying
LIM Kit Siang has every reason to calculate the risk of having his party leaving Pakatan Harapan or being booted out amid unscrupulous statements issued by its Member of Parliaments (MPs) and some senior members who deemed to be going against the Constitution and the Social Contract.
According to sources, even PM Dr Mahathir is getting irritated with the spat of foolish and racial remarks which put his government under heavy criticism, especially DAP inclination towards recognising the banned 'Parti Komunis Malaya' and its fighters as heroes of Independence.
This irks many quarters of Malaysians, especially families and victims of communist brutality about 40 years ago. Read Nga Kor Ming statement, for intance, and one can easily arrive at the assumption that DAP wants to change the national history and make Malaysia a communist state.
Kit Siang is aware of it, and that explains why he called for Pakatan MPs to close rank and avoid making unwanted remarks that could rattle DAP position in the government coalition.
But it didnt stop there. The jawi khat issue also hurt the Malays and Muslims when Dong Zong staged a strong protest against its introduction in Chinese schools (Malaysia is the only country in the world that allows vernacular education).
While many Chinese products are printed with jawi as to entice Muslim customers, DAP went against all odds by objecting to it amid the Malay tolerance for Chinese khat to enter the country many years ago.
Nasty statements about jawi were made by some of DAP MPs, some even went to the extent of associating it to pornography. And a racist statement made by one of its tycoons against the Armed Forces (he earlier changed the Jalur Gemilang stripe to black) is seen as pushing the racism issue to the wall.
A close friend to Dr M and a strong PH supporter, he then retracted his statement and apologised, without being penalised the same manner in which some social media activists who tried to spew hatred speech on the Internet, we dealt with, a few of them went to jail.
Kit Siang is actually counting the days for DAP. Knowing how much it depends on Dr M and Anwar Ibrahim (should he succeeds the prime minister), the rest of PH components have other options too to remain in power.
As DAP is getting to the nerves of the rakyat, including peace-loving Chinese and Indians, it needs to weigh the limited option. Having a large number of seat in the Parliament does not provide power to DAP should it stands alone, and that worries Kit Siang.
It needs a strong political pact with one or two Malay parties as the one it has found in Pakatan. But the tape will not run long based on the current scenario. With PH itself facing a tug-of-war among its components, DAP gotta find other avenue to safe its root in Putrajaya.
However, the future looks bleak. With the rise of Umno-Pas collaboration and the growing blase for Pakatan among the people, plus a bad record Guan Eng and some DAP ministers are showing, the walls start to crumble for Kit Siang.
No, he will not able to control the hate speech issued by more and more members in DAP. It provides a good bearing for Barisan Nasional to make a comeback. What Kit Siang needs to do now, perhaps, is to ensure that Anwar becomes the next PM, which many says is unlikely. Otherwise, DAP will go back to where it belonged in Dewan Rakyat.
