Johor Tops Number Of Flood Evacuees With 3 841

(Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees at relief centres in Johor, Pahang, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Sabah continued to rise this morning with many parts of the country still experiencing heavy rain and flooding.
According to Bernama, the number of flood victims in Johor increased to 3,841 in six districts, compared with 2,553 yesterday.
State health and environment committee chairman R Vidyananthan said Mersing became the latest district to be hit by floods after 366 victims from 90 families were evacuated to six relief centres.
In Pahang, the state disaster management committee secretariat reported that there were 2,188 flood victims at 51 centres in eight districts.
Of the total, 1,421 people were victims of the second wave of floods, with Lipis registering the highest number at 553 followed by Rompin (340) and Raub (278).
Eight roads have been closed, including Jalan Sungai Lembing in Kuantan, Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan (Maran), Jalan Kuantan-Segamat (Pekan), Jalan Temerloh-Jerantut (Temerloh) and Jalan Bentong-Gua Musang (Lipis).
According to the department of irrigation and drainage’s website, six rivers in the state were at danger levels.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast rain in all flood-affected districts in Pahang today.
In Melaka, the number of evacuees rose to 2,537, involving 656 families, as of 8am, from 1,778 from 462 families last night.
The Melaka civil defence department said the victims were from 14 areas in Alor Gajah and nine areas each in Melaka Tengah and Jasin.
A total of 1,015 evacuees from 270 families were at 10 centres in Alor Gajah, 1,391 from 356 families at nine centres in Melaka Tengah and 131 from 30 families at two centres in Jasin.
In Sabah, the number of evacuees continued to rise, with 2,435 from 874 families this morning, compared with 1,823 from 599 families last night.
Twenty-three flood relief centres have been opened in six districts – Kota Marudu, Paitan, Pitas, Sandakan, Telupid and Beluran – since Friday.
In Negeri Sembilan, the number of evacuees at 22 centres increased to 2,041 from 554 families as of 7am, compared with 1,892 from 505 families last night.
State public works department director Wan Hasnan Wan Musa said 15 roads involving several districts in the state had been closed to all traffic while three more, including in Tampin, were only passable to heavy vehicles following landslides and floods.
In Terengganu, the number of evacuees remained at 137 from 42 families at two centres in Dungun.
In Selangor, two flood relief centres in the Kuala Langat district were reopened yesterday to house 40 victims. - FMT
