Despite stopping near the guardrail, the driver was unable to escape and was ultimately trapped inside the burning vehicle, resulting in his death.
Johor Baru north district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, said they received information about the accident at 5am.
He said the incident, involving a burning car, occurred at Km5.5 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) here.
"The accident is believed to have happened when a Honda City S 1.5L i-VTEC, driven by a 22-year-old local man, was travelling in the right lane towards Skudai. Upon reaching the location, the car suddenly caught fire. The victim managed to pull over near the guardrail, but this prevented him from exiting, leaving him trapped and ultimately burnt inside the vehicle," he said in a statement today.
He added that the fire department was present at the scene and attempted to extinguish the flames but was unable to rescue the victim from the vehicle.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Balveer also urged anyone with information regarding the case to contact and provide details to the investigating officer, Inspector Ong Jin Siong, at 011-16490168. - NST
