KUALA LUMPUR: Seven people believed to be operating a call centre for a job scam syndicate were arrested at a condominium unit in Cyberjaya last week.
Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department (CCID) director Ramli Yoosuf said that the suspects were believed to be call centre operators who targeted victims in Hong Kong.
The syndicate, believed to be operating for about a year, offered fake jobs to their victims and were paid a monthly salary of RM4,000.
“They were responsible for instructing victims to complete specific tasks before being promised a 20% return on the amount obtained,” he said at a press conference at CCID’s headquarters here.
Ramli also called on property owners to be more vigilant in monitoring their tenants’ activities to prevent their premises from being misused.
“Stating that they are unaware of activities conducted on their premises is unacceptable. Property owners must take responsibility for any criminal activities occurring in their units,” he said.
Ramli said police are currently reviewing a proposal to establish a specific legal provision to address this issue.
He said amendments to the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code which were passed last year had already helped to strengthen the police’s ability to investigate commercial crime cases.
The amendments include allowing the police to prevent the withdrawal or use of funds by fraudsters, and granting police officers with a rank of sergeant and above powers to seize assets.
“Efforts are underway to create legal provisions for several other offences, including aiding criminal offences by renting or allowing premises to be used for criminal purposes,” said Ramli. - FMT
