BANGKOK: The second batch of 25 Malaysians rescued from job scam syndicates in Myanmar has been repatriated via Mae Sot, Tak province, in northern Thailand.
Malaysia’s chargé d’affaires to Myanmar, Johan Ariff Razak, said the Malaysians were handed over by Thai authorities at about 10am.
“A total of 23 men and two women aged between 21 and 47 were repatriated by land and are expected to arrive at the Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration, customs, quarantine and security complex tomorrow,” he told Bernama when contacted today.
He added that the Malaysians departed from Mae Sot at around 2pm local time.
Johan, who assisted the Malaysian embassy in Thailand in verifying the victims’ identities, said one of the Malaysians who had entered Myanmar legally would be travelling separately from the group.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s interim chargé d’affaires to Thailand Bong Yik Jui said embassy officials in Bangkok had helped all the victims to contact their next of kin in Malaysia.
The victims have also been issued temporary travel documents.
Bong said embassy officials in Bangkok would accompany the victims from Tak province to Bukit Kayu Hitam, which is expected to take more than 20 hours.
Last month, 15 Malaysians were among the 260 foreigners rescued from call centre syndicates in Myawaddy, Myanmar.
They were successfully brought back to Malaysia on Feb 24 and handed over to the police to assist in investigations. - FMT
