Ismail Sabri Ajak Pemimpin Asean Berucap Dalam Bahasa Melayu Di Sidang Kemuncak 2024 Di Malaysia
Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is calling on his successor, current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to push for Bahasa Melayu to be recognized as ASEAN’s second language.
With Malaysia set to take the ASEAN chair in the coming year, Ismail expressed his hope that leaders would actively use Bahasa Melayu during the ASEAN Summit. He believes it could foster better communication and unity among the Southeast Asian nations.

Back in 2022, Ismail advocated for this idea during a conversation with former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, affectionately known as Jokowi. He told reporters at the Majlis Pelancaran Prtubuhan Aspirasi Bahasa Melayu Malaysia event in Petaling Jaya that while regional variations in pronunciation and dialect exist, the essence of Bahasa Melayu remains intact.
Ismail mentioned that during his discussions with Jokowi, Indonesia did not oppose the idea, but some individuals felt that Bahasa Melayu had many dialects. He emphasized the need to revisit this topic in future ASEAN meetings, saying:
“This matter should be rediscussed in ASEAN meetings in the future. I hope Malaysia, as the chairman next year, will play a vital role in continuing this initiative,”
Additionally, Ismail stressed the importance of promoting Bahasa Melayu not just within government agencies but across all levels, including the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. He called for a shift in mindset among Malaysians, particularly those who may feel embarrassed about using the national language in favor of English.

During the event, Ismail also shared that officially recognizing Bahasa Melayu as ASEAN’s second language could enhance its status in the region. He expressed a desire for leaders of ASEAN nations to converse in Bahasa Melayu during the Summit, even if this initiative is not on the formal agenda. He remarked:
“I hope the prime minister will relay this view (to the ASEAN members)… Maybe that could influence other countries (to do the same), like Thailand and Cambodia, where many speak Malay,”
