A Bersatu Youth leader has lamented that for the past three years, the party’s annual general meeting (AGM) has been about boot licking instead of winning over public sentiment.
Wing exco member Meor Naqiuddin said while he is not opposed to Muhyiddin Yassin staying on as Bersatu president, he did take issue with every AGM being overshadowed by drama about the latter.
“Why? Because the AGM, which is supposed to highlight the party’s aspirations, policies, and goals to be evaluated by the people, has become a stage for sycophants.
“For three times in a row, the AGM has become a stage for theatrical drama, which to this day has not ended,” he said in a statement last night.
Meor cited how in 2023, the AGM’s main motion was to pressure Muhyiddin to reverse his retirement plans, and in 2024, it was for the Bersatu president to remain in his position until the next general election.
Meor NaqiuddinThen last week, the AGM again approved a motion for Muhyiddin to stay on as president and nominate him as Bersatu’s candidate for prime minister - amid a push for the Pagoh MP to step down via statutory declarations (SD).
SD saga drowning out policy
Meor lamented that the drama around Muhyiddin drowned out debates by delegates about the economy, social issues, cost of living, and other matters.
Even a key highlight of Muhyiddin’s own speech this year, about a shared prosperity vision for all Malaysians should Bersatu return to power, was eclipsed by the SD saga.
“The people would have found this (vision) interesting.
“But no, we are stuck in nostalgia. The shared prosperity vision in the president’s policy speech became just a poster attachment with fewer than 300 likes (on social media),” he said.
Muhyiddin YassinHe said while Muhyiddin’s leadership and image as a caring leader are important to Perikatan Nasional, a winning strategy should not solely revolve around that.
Some 120 Bersatu division leaders have signed SDs to request that the Bersatu president cede power to his deputy, Hamzah Zainudin.
They are reportedly worried that Muhyiddin is unable to lead Bersatu and PN to victory in the next general election.
While the Bersatu AGM on Sunday approved a motion to retain the Bersatu president, sources told Malaysiakini that a party leader will still be presenting the SDs to Muhyiddin. - Mkini
