Intervene In Logging At Kelantan Forest Reserve Ngo Tells Pas Ministers

The Kelantan government recently approved logging to be carried out in the Nenggiri permanent forest reserve in Gua Musang. (Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: An environmental NGO has urged two PAS ministers from Kelantan to intervene in the state’s logging activities to protect its natural resources.
Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) said energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan and environment and water minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man should look for ways to ensure that Kelantan was not solely dependent on logging activities to increase its revenue.
“Peka has no confidence in the state government when it comes to the protection of natural resources,” its president, Damien Thanam, told FMT.
“That is why we are calling for the federal government and the two ministers to intervene and help resolve the state’s financial issues and control the logging activities that are destroying its natural resources.

“Their ministries have initiated many Acts and regulations to protect the natural resources. However, they are pointless unless they make their home state a good example on environmental protection.”
Damien said depending on natural resources as the main contributor to the state’s revenue was also an example of poor leadership. He said the state government was supposed to protect these resources instead of allowing them to be destroyed.
He called for the Kelantan government to impose a moratorium on logging in the state, and for Putrajaya to compensate those affected.
“This would allow the enforcement authorities to track down the illegal loggers,” he said, adding that Putrajaya should also review logging plans in Pahang and Kedah.
He also called for any income derived from logging activities to be paid directly to the state treasury.
Previously, Kelantan deputy menteri besar Amar Nik Abdullah said the state government had approved logging to be carried out at the Nenggiri permanent forest reserve in Gua Musang.
He also said the state had never exceeded the logging limits set by the federal government. - FMT
