(EPA Images pic)PETALING JAYA: In a rare show of support, PAS has backed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s decision to help with rebuilding efforts in Gaza, particularly to build a school, hospital and mosque in the war-torn territory.
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the initiative should be supported by the public as part of Malaysia’s humanitarian commitment to Palestinians.
Ahmad Fadhli Shaari. He added that this was Malaysia’s moral responsibility in line with the country’s foreign policy, which has consistently been in support of the Palestinian cause.
“For parties who hold the view that the government should focus on our country first, it must be emphasised that concern for global issues does not mean we are neglecting the needs of our own people.
“Malaysia has long practised the policy of striking a balance in aiding our fellow countrymen and foreign nations, as proven by the various humanitarian missions that have been held in the past,” he said in a Facebook post.
To ensure transparency regarding the plan, Fadhli suggested that the government table the initiative in detail in Parliament for MPs to scrutinise.
“This way, its planning, source of funding, and implementation mechanisms can be clarified, consequently strengthening the public’s support for this initiative,” said the Pasir Mas MP.
On Wednesday, Anwar said Malaysia would begin rebuilding efforts in Gaza by constructing a school, hospital and mosque as part of a broader initiative in collaboration with the Japanese government.
He said the projects would be carried out with the support of the private sector and the Malaysian people.
This was criticised by former federal minister Rafidah Aziz, who said Putrajaya should pay attention to Malaysia first given the “sad state of many of our rural schools” as well as “inadequacies in our outlying government hospitals”.
Julau MP Larry Sng shared similar sentiments, saying Anwar’s priority should be Malaysia as the prime minister.
Anwar dismissed this and appealed to Malaysians to have greater compassion over the situation in Gaza, saying the war there was the biggest tragedy that had struck the global Muslim community since World War 2.
He also said some issues in Malaysia “won’t be resolved until the end of time”. - FMT
