Igp Cops Just Following Procedure Not Intimidating Politicians
Police are just following procedures and have no intention to intimidate politicians, assured Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador
Citing the probe involving Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, Hamid (above) said police were acting within existing guidelines
"We took action based on a report by an individual, who alleged that she had issued a statement that might be deemed seditious
"However, we also discovered that she is alleging that there is an effort to defame her," he was quoted as saying by The Star
He said police then followed normal procedure and asked her to come to Bukit Aman to explain the matter to facilitate investigations
"This is not an act of intimidation
"Under my watch, I will not - and have not - allowed the police to take actions that might be construed as having political motives
"We will be fair, and there is no question of the police trying to intimidate or suppress freedom of speech. Not under my watch," he said
He added that police will investigate those responsible if they find that Yeoh's allegations that someone was trying to defame her were true
The police are probing the owner of a "Hannah Yeoh" Facebook account under the Sedition Act for allegedly producing a seditious and inflammatory post
However, the former deputy women, family and community development minister reiterated that the post, attributed to her, is fake
Yeoh (photo) is also being probed over a genuine tweet dated March 9 enquiring about the fate of the National Strategic Plan to Address the Causes of Underage Marriage under her successor Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff
The police also confirmed this probe, saying that she would be investigated under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act
Besides Yeoh, police are also investigating former water, land and natural resources minister Xavier Jayakumar
Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is also being probed over an interview he gave back in March in which he was critical of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government
Hamid assured that police will be following procedure on the Syed Saddiq investigation, too
The top cop said he had instructed his officers to be prudent in such investigations
"Prime minister Muhyiddin has told me that the police must not be a tool to be used against the government's political enemies
"Even during Pakatan Harapan's rule, then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad advised me not to take action based on political motives
"The police are on the right track, taking actions based on the Federal Constitution and laws," Hamid said
He added that he was willing to meet with any dissatisfied parties and explain matters to them. - Mkini
