PBRS president Joseph Kurup (left, in white shirt) speaking to BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Kota Kinabalu today.KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah president Joseph Kurup today said he was disappointed when a PAS representative, and not someone from PBRS, was nominated as a state assemblyman following the 2020 state polls.
Kurup said PBRS, which had lost all five seats it contested in the state elections, had sought help from Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) to endorse the party so that it could have at least one lawmaker in the state assembly.
“But we felt let down when told that those at the top had earlier agreed that a PAS representative must be named so that the party would not contest the state elections.
“We all know that PAS could not strengthen BN’s position in Sabah, then and now,” he said in his speech during PBRS’ triennial delegates convention.
He reminded delegates that BN’s presence in Sabah could only be reinforced if its component parties were strong.
Sabah PAS secretary Aliakbar Gulasan was sworn in as a Gabungan Rakyat Sabah nominated assemblyman in October 2020, making it the first time the Islamic party had obtained a place in the state assembly.
Meanwhile, PBRS’ loss in the previous Sabah polls did not stop Kurup from asking the BN leadership for more seats to contest in the coming general election.
“I don’t know when GE15 will be held exactly, but I’m certain it will be this year.
“In line with this, we are requesting for an opportunity to contest in seats we believe we can give our opponents a run for their money,” he said.
He also said the party believed it should be given one or two senatorships in the Dewan Negara. - FMT
