Hygiene Procedures For Tourism Being Finalised Says Minister

Tourism minister Nancy Shukri during a dialogue with travel bloggers and social media influencers today.KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya is finalising standard operating procedures for four more sub-sectors under domestic tourism and these will be published by the National Security Council soon, says Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri
Nancy said the SOPs are for spas and massage centres; meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions; promotional events including travel fairs and craft carnivals; and water theme parks
All these activities will be allowed to operate from Wednesday
“We believe that the resumption of these activities will boost domestic tourism
“While our borders are still closed to foreign visitors, we are confident that domestic tourism will help with our economic recovery,” she told FMT after a dialogue with travel bloggers and social media influencers today
Nancy said 2018 domestic tourism recorded some RM60.4 billion in receipts. “For 2019, we estimate this figure has also increased to RM67 billion, so there is an increasing demand for domestic tourism.”She said while there may be concerns about travelling due to Covid-19, the SOPs have taken these into consideration
“For the tourism and cultural sectors under the ministry, the detailed SOPs were developed through consultation with industry players and other ministries, including the health ministry
“What is important is that everyone abides by the SOPs, including social distancing, sanitising their hands regularly and wearing face masks,” she said

Nancy recently called on Malaysians to “travel domestic” to save the tourism industry which, like many others, is reeling from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. - FMT
