BUKIT MERTAJAM: The human resources ministry intends to set up a one-stop labour centre in Penang to further help workers, says minister Steven Sim.
He said this centre would consolidate various services related to workers, such as training and welfare matters.
“With this one-stop labour centre, any issues related to workers, whether raised by employees or employers, can be addressed at one place.
“There will be no need to visit various offices like the labour office, industrial relations department (JPP), Industrial Court, trade union affairs department (Jheks) or Perkeso,” he said during the DAP Aidilfitri open house here today.
Sim said Penang would be the first state for this pilot project and similar one-stop centres may be opened nationwide later.
On retraining workers, Sim said his ministry wanted to work with the state government to implement more upskilling and reskilling programmes in Penang.
He said the ministry will collaborate with various academies in Penang to provide further training to workers.
“We need more manpower with technical abilities and skills.
“I believe Penang is an ideal place to establish an institution for higher skills training in Malaysia,” he said.
Ayer Kuning by-election
Meanwhile, Sim, who is also the Penang DAP chairman, said they would provide more support for the Barisan Nasional candidate in the April 26 by-election in Ayer Kuning.
The party’s election director, Wong Kah Woh, had appointed Howard Lee as the campaign coordinator for the Ayer Kuning by-election, he added.
Sim said Penang DAP had no problem providing full assistance to the campaign.
“I have even received an invitation to give a speech and we will continue to help.” - FMT
