How To Make Wordpress Blog Index By Google
Any business that wants to survive in the modern world must have an online presence. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your site with a fine SEO (Search Engine Optimization) ranking. SEO tactics boost your site and rank up the search results on Google and other search engines, directing more traffic to your WordPress and hopefully generate more sales. My client just launch a new WordPress blog, and want Google to start crawling it, there are a couple things that need to be done.
My client thought maybe Google needs a few days or weeks for his site to get index by Google. So he did not bother much and just continue writing a new post. Almost a month passed, and still there is no any of his blog content get index by Google and other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, Yandex and more. Technically, Google Spiders will automatically crawl to every new website and its content on the internet. “Google spider” has an Artificial intelligence (AI) and will crawl if there is any activity on the web. But no result came and totally ignore his blog.
Having a website/blog running and no one found it on the web? That became a big problem. It’s not funny if you have written 20 articles and nobody reading your post accept yourself. I’ve gathered a few tips just for you to make sure you can make the most out of SEO and your sites get index by Google and other search engines.
Check robots.txt
The robots.txt file may have a command to prevent Google Spider to crawl and process the indexing. Check out the robots.txt file in the root of your WordPress site. Or you may just remove or rename it.
Another place to check is in the Reading Settings in WordPress. Go to “Settings > Reading”. Be sure that “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” in unchecked. Some hosting provider which had auto-install WordPress will check that box during setup, so it’s up to you to manually uncheck it when you are ready for traffic. After you have uncheck it, make sure to click on the Save Changes button.
Related to
Everything you do on your website must be related to you and your business. If you create blog content or web pages about selling clothes but you sell fruit, Google will not treat your content and site with relevance and over time soon you will lose ground gained all the hard work you had done.
Images Name
All people and me often forgets to name the images, often leaving them with names like ‘screenshot_20200921’. Not only does this look unprofessional, it’s not exactly something someone will ever search for on Google and you are missing out on a lot of traffic.
Social Media
Try to link your WordPress site with various social media channels and will direct more traffic, especially if you remember to add share buttons to content on your site. Not just social media such as Facebook and Twitter only. Depending on your business or website focus, other social media platforms can be utilised, such as Instagram and Tik Tok if you’re targeting youngsters. There are also numerous WordPress plugins available that do the same thing.
SSL Certificate
Google announced that a secure website using HTTPS over HTTP will rank slightly higher. So by getting a SSL Certificate into your WordPress site you will get the benefit of trust for your clients using your website especially for businesses and you will get the Google ranking benefit too.
Links
Links to your site from other sources and if the source had high traffic volume it can make your traffic shoot up like a rocket. Spamming your web address on a reputable blog or partnership website is more trustworthy. Never value quantity of links over quality.
Search Engines
Sign up to Google Webmaster Tools now it’s called Search Console. Or sign in with your existing Google account and add your website as your property there. I recommend adding all URL address of your websites, for example, http://jonloh.com, https://jonloh.com and http://www.jonloh.com.
After adding your site URL, Google will ask you to verify your site. You can choose to verify your site using the recommended method, by downloading the HTML verification file given by Google and then upload it to root directory in your Web-hosting server provider. You also can choose the “Alternate method” if you like. And then follow the Google Search console instruction.
Request to get Indexed
Within Search Console page, now it is time to ask for Google to index your website immediately. To do this in Search Console go to the left sidebar menu click on “Crawls”, then in the drop-down sub-menu click “Fetch as Google”. And then click “Fetch” then click “Request Indexing”. A pop up dialog ask you to choose the submit method. Choose “Crawl this URL”. Since Google has updated the Search console it makes you easier to request indexing your website page.
Submit a Sitemap
Creating XML Sitemap, it tells the search engines about the list of pages on your website. To do it, you can simply install a WordPress plugin called “Google XML Sitemaps” or “Yoast SEO”. You can simply search this plugin on the WP admin on the plugins page. Yoast generate it the sitemap automatically for you.
Then install and activate the plugin. After installing the plugin, go to Search Console again, this time go to left menu search for “Crawl > Sitemaps”. In the Sitemaps page, click on the red button on the top right of the page “ADD/TEST SITEMAP” then write down “sitemap.xml”, at the end of URL.
