PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook has played down the recent heckling of the party’s Penang chief, Steven Sim, by an aide to national chairman Lim Guan Eng, calling it an isolated incident which does not reflect instability in DAP.
Loke attributed the incident to a single individual whom he said had likely overreacted after having too much to drink, Malay Mail reported.
“DAP advocates the spirit of unity, so there is no disagreement. When you see all those who are attending the dinner today, you will know that DAP is a big family,” he was quoted as saying at a separate event last night.
The aide, Tan Khong Chong, reportedly hurled a vulgar insult at Sim and called him a traitor at a dinner in Penang last Saturday.
Sim dismissed the incident as “a storm in a teacup” while Khong Chong himself apologised.
Yesterday, Loke said Sim had accepted Khong Chong’s apology, and that no official complaint had been received over the incident.
On a separate matter, Loke said he respected the decision by DAP national adviser Tan Kok Wai and national treasurer Fong Kui Lun to withdraw from next month’s elections for the party’s central executive committee.
Loke said Fong and Kok Wai had informed him of their wish prior to announcing their decision.
“They spoke very clearly of the need to cultivate the younger generation and to give opportunities to young leaders to serve in leadership roles. So I think this decision is worthy of respect,” he said.
Apart from Fong and Kok Wai, party veteran Phee Boon Poh has also withdrawn his candidacy to make room for the next generation of leaders. - FMT
