M Kula Segaran says the senior ministers should work together to formulate ‘final and easy to understand’ SOPs, announced by a single spokesman.PETALING JAYA: Former human resources minister M Kula Segaran says a single government spokesman must be appointed to communicate future SOPs, as the conflicting directives in recent days have caused confusion among businesses and employees.
Both the National Security Council (MKN) and the international trade and industry ministry (MITI) have recently issued instructions dictating who is allowed to work on-site and for how long.
Kula called on senior ministers Ismail Sabri Yaakob (MKN) and Mohamed Azmin Ali (MITI) to work in tandem to construct “final and easy to understand” SOPs which could then be clearly communicated by a single spokesman.
“The government’s WFH (work from home) directive has been changed too many times over the past two days without achieving any clarity for employees and businesses.
“Workers and businesses are helpless, not knowing which SOPs to follow, as conflicting SOPs were announced by Ismail Sabri and Azmin,” he said.
Kula questioned the directives allowing 90% of managerial staff to work from home and limiting office hours for selected workers to four hours a day, three days a week.
He described the latter as an “absurd ruling”.
He said the directives had been “completely botched” and workers were experiencing “unnecessary problems”.
This confusion, he said, could lead to disruptions in business activities which would further harm the many companies already struggling due to the pandemic’s effects on the economy.
Kula also said the government should engage with employers, employees, unions and NGOs before making future decisions, as they would benefit from stakeholder input.
His statement follows one from the Malaysian Trades Union Congress that also accused the government of failing to consult with the relevant parties before announcing the work from home order. - FMT
