SHAH ALAM: Former education minister Radzi Jidin has called on the government to hold a second Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination session for candidates affected by the floods.
Earlier today, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said SPM candidates affected by the floods would be relocated to hostels or alternative examination centres to ensure they can sit for their exams as scheduled.
“There’s another option. If necessary, review the schedule and hold a second session for the affected candidates. It’s not difficult – just find a date for this second session,” said Radzi, who is also a Bersatu vice-president.
“It’s easy to say all the affected candidates will be moved, but look at the situation on the ground,” he said during his speech at Bersatu’s general assembly here.
At a press conference in Putrajaya today, Fadhlina said 5,377 SPM candidates were being evacuated, including 3,111 in Kelantan, 1,734 in Terengganu and 532 in Kedah.
In a Bernama report, Fadhlina said the education ministry would proceed with the SPM Malay language oral exam in all flood-affected states as scheduled from tomorrow until Thursday.
She said the decision was made after advice from the authorities such as the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and the Malaysian meteorological services department, taking into account forecasts that the northeast monsoon is only expected to end in February.
The National Disaster Command Centre said 153,411 flood victims have been evacuated to 686 temporary relief centres in nine states as of noon today. The death toll remains at three.
Kelantan has the most number of flood victims with 97,131, followed by Terengganu (43,273), Kedah (9,129), Negeri Sembilan (1,915), Pahang (762), Johor (627), Melaka (298), Perlis (188) and Selangor (88). - FMT
