PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's latest statement attacking Pakatan Harapan by calling many of its leaders "non-believers" and "immoral" shows his inconsistency and lack of principle, said Abdul Aziz Bari.
The DAP member said Hadi previously gave a similar label to Umno, a party which PAS has since made its ally.
"Hadi seems to have labelled Harapan leaders infidels with his statement. He used to do this to Umno, and now he is doing the same to Harapan,” Aziz (above) told Malaysiakini.
In 1981, Hadi labelled Umno as kafir (infidel) in his infamous sermon 'Amanat Haji Hadi', which sparked a split among the Malays.
Aziz pointed out that Harapan in principle is another form of Pakatan Rakyat, which the Islamist party used to be a part of.
"Whatever it is, such a leader is unfit to lead a political party," he added.
The Tebing Tinggi assemblyperson said this when asked to comment on Hadi's latest statement saying PAS will never form a partnership with Harapan in the next national polls.
According to Hadi, when Harapan contested the 14th general election in 2018, the coalition openly accepted bribe givers and takers.
"Many in Harapan are non-believers and openly immoral, they take in those who are corrupt.
"Most of those who committed party hopping did not do it because of principle, but because they were after all the lies and empty promises (which are the same as bribes)," the Marang MP said in his Minda Presiden PAS article today.
PAS’ basic values gone?
Aziz said a political leader must be inclusive.
"Islam does not teach us to act like this. It brings the question - what kind of Islamic teaching is PAS practising?
"What is sure is that PAS is now befriending those it branded kafir before, including Umno and MCA.
"In this context, it clearly shows that they are inconsistent and have no principles," he said, adding that PAS has also allegedly abandoned its basic values.
PAS president Abdul Hadi AwangAccording to the former law lecturer, those PAS values include the party’s struggle to form an Islamic country and enforce hudud which it promoted for the past several decades.
"Another thing, Hadi is clearly doing things against what his predecessors promoted in PAS, including Nik Aziz (Nik Mat) and Fadzil Noor.
"Working with Umno is something that these two prominent PAS leaders could never accept," Aziz said.
For the record, in the 12th and 13th general elections, PAS formed a cooperation with PKR and DAP under the Pakatan Rakyat banner.
In 2019, after the 14th general election, PAS entered into a pact with its arch nemesis Umno under the concept of Islamic unity, called Muafakat Nasional.
In 2020, PAS became a part of the ruling government together with Bersatu, helmed by then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin under another political coalition Perikatan Nasional. - Mkini
