Guan Eng Vows To Sue Paper And Mca Veep For Defamation
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said he will initiate a defamation suit against MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng and The Star.
This was over a letter that appeared in The Star on March 7 penned by Tan which claimed that Lim, as finance minister, had demanded that SJK(C) Kuek Ho Yao change its name in exchange for RM4 million in government funds.
"This is false and untrue. The RM4 million was handed over even though construction had not yet begun," said Lim in a statement.
"As finance minister, I had never set the condition that SJK(C) Kuek Ho Yao must change its name to receive my allocation of RM4 million."
Lim noted that Tan had repeated the allegation on Facebook yesterday. Lim said he had "no choice" but to take legal action as the repeated "lies" might be accepted by the public.
SJK(C) Kuek Ho Yao is a new school in Johor Bahru that was established during the BN administration. It was named after the late Kuek, who is a philanthropist.
Lim said during his time as finance minister, RM43 million in federal funds was allocated for the construction purposes of 26 Chinese primary schools - more than what MCA had allocated in any consecutive 22-months period when it was part of the federal government.
"Such allocations were given unconditionally by the Finance Ministry on application by the then deputy education minister Teo Nie Cheng," he explained.
In a press statement yesterday, Tan claimed he did not make the allegation against Lim, but instead "posed a question" on whether the allegation was true. - Mkini
