Groups Urge Govt To Stop Clp Trial Limit On Law Grads
A group of NGOs and activists today called on the government to abolish the four attempts limit for trial examinations that are imposed on overseas law graduates to get a certificate in legal practice (CLP).
The CLP is a pre-requisite by the Legal Practice Qualifying Board (LPQB) which is under the purview of the Attorney General’s Chambers.
Law students must pass five subjects and are only given four attempts to pass the CLP before they become bonafide lawyers.
Enlight Malaysia president M Jay Raj P Muresh in a statement claimed that the attempts limit only further burdens students who want to practise law in the country.
“We are not asking that CLP be abolished in total because we understand that by having this course, it can help to increase the number of legal professionals in the local market and more planning on the job market can be done by policymakers.
“However, we are united in seeking that the four attempts limit for trial examinations be stopped and that all law graduates are allowed to continue taking the post-graduate course to become attorneys at law,” he said.
According to the statement, the call for abolishment of the limit is also supported by other NGOs and youth leaders, including Liga Rakyat Demokratik, Pertubuhan Serikat Rakyat Malaysia, lawyer Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi, Michelle Ling Shyan Mih of Gerakan Guaman Rakyat, and Selangor PKR Youth deputy chief Mohd Shahffeq Eqhwan Shahrom.
Jay Raj added that many of those who graduated with law degrees from overseas universities also came from the London International University located in Malaysia, where they still borrow from the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN).
“These students still have to take out loans, and thus the four trial examinations only burden our students,” said Jay Raj, who is also a law lecturer.
He claimed that abolishing the limit would also create a balance in the local graduate market. - Mkini
