(Bernama pic)PASIR MAS: Five families were forced to evacuate to a nearby temporary relief centre after Sungai Lanchang burst its banks and flooded Kampung Bendang Perol, Gual To’Deh, Rantau Panjang, last night.
Narizan Zakaria, 57, had to wade through half-metre-deep floodwaters carrying her 19-day-old grandson to the main road, before heading to the centre at SK Gual To’Deh.
“The area around our house is prone to flooding, but it did not rain yesterday. The flooding occurred after the river overflowed its banks. There was ankle-deep water by 10pm,” she told reporters when met at the centre today.
She said the family decided to leave the house immediately and go to the relief centre due to the worsening situation.

“My daughter, Zulkartini Hassan, 31, has just given birth to her first son. We were worried that if the water kept on rising, we would not be able to save ourselves. So I carried my grandson, Aydel Rafael Muhammad Saiful, while Zulkartini was taken in a boat,” she said.
The welfare department’s disaster information portal showed that 17 people from five families are currently taking shelter at the centre.
Repairs are being carried out to a bund that burst early this morning flooding the Tanjong Karang rice mill and its surrounding area.
The drainage and irrigation department blamed the event on Sungai Tengi overflowing after a high tide. - FMT
