Govt Stable Certain Umno Leaders Unstable Pas Veep On Snap Polls
PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Abdullah dismissed the need for a snap general election and fired a salvo at Umno leaders who are pushing for it.
According to him, the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is stable.
“It is those in Umno with vested interests who are unstable. The government, Alhamdulillah (God willing), is stable,” he told reporters in Kelantan.
However, Amar said the situation could become volatile if the opposition attempted to topple the government or if one of the parties in the ruling coalition withdrew its support.
“For example, like what Umno did to Muhyiddin Yassin before this,” he added, referring to the move which saw Ismail Sabri replacing the Bersatu president as prime minister in August last year.
PAS vice-president Mohd Amar AbdullahThe opposition has pledged to support the current government until the next general election.
‘Govt unstable with weak majority’
Previously, Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who is aligned with the faction pressing for the polls, criticised the party’s former secretary-general, Annuar Musa, for claiming the government is stable.
“Everyone, including foreign investors, knows that the central government is one with a weak majority. It can be threatened, tied up, oppressed, disrespected and abandoned at any time,” he said.
Former premier Najib Abdul Razak and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi have been pushing the prime minister to hold the election.
Najib has been convicted of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering involving RM42 million from SRC International, then a subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). He was sentenced to a fine of RM210 million and 12 years in jail by the High Court.
The Court of Appeal has upheld his conviction and sentence but issued a stay of execution pending the disposal of his appeal with the Federal Court.
The former premier is also on trial for charges in connection with the 1MDB scandal.
Zahid is also facing a slew of corruption charges involving his foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi.
Political rivals have linked their call for an early election to the court cases, claiming that if Umno returned to the seat of power, it could alter the duo’s fate. - Mkini
