(Reuters pic)KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya will be implementing a programme aimed at improving the nation’s electricity supply system as part of efforts to transition to renewable energy (RE), says Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The government has approved an allocation for the distribution of 1,200 megawatts (MW) of RE for solar power, he said.
This will include the installation of solar panels on the roofs of government buildings, Bernama reported.
Other forms of RE distribution involve the development of solar parks and the generation of green hydrogen, he said.

Speaking at the 5th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) here today, Ismail said the government expects 14,000 job opportunities and new investments worth RM6 billion to be created to support the development of the country’s RE sector.
The government will also support pioneering initiatives such as the green energy island concept in Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian, Terengganu, to provide electricity supply that is consistent, affordable and has a low carbon impact.
“The two resort islands will get 24-hour electricity supply by 2025, thus helping to reduce 70% of greenhouse gas emissions.”
Tenaga Nasional Bhd, with the cooperation of Syarikat MySuri Biz Technologies Sdn Bhd, will also provide 1,000 units of electric vehicles as taxis to support the country’s decarbonisation efforts.
Ismail also said the current global trend in setting aggressive targets to reduce carbon footprint has positively impacted Malaysia.
He said this will open up new economic and business opportunities for local renewable energy industry players. - FMT
