Goodbye Trump Hello Biden
WHAT are our expectations of Joe Biden. Replacing Donald Trump as the US President is just a formality. The main focus is more on his policies notably foreign, economic and engagement with the Muslim world.
Among a raft of orders addressing immigration, Biden will revoke Trump’s emergency declaration that helped fund the construction of a border wall and end a travel ban on some majority-Muslim countries. Sounds positive but how will it be implemented. To soon to shower him with credits, I suppose.
However, 'ousting' Trump is an achievement, a victory to most nations. His orthodox view of Islam and the 'unpleasant' foreign policy seems to have freed many.
As the incoming US climate envoy, John Kerry will be the global face of President-elect Biden’s ambitious climate agenda. But rejoining the Paris climate agreement on Day 1 won’t be enough to win the trust of the government officials, CEOs and climate action advocates he’ll be dealing with around the world.
So, what does the world want from John Kerry in 2021?
The demands fall into two categories, according to interviews with more than 20 officials and advocates across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. The first - that the Congress backs Kerry’s rhetoric with tough domestic emissions reduction legislation.
The second - that Kerry himself plays the role of the world’s climate cheerleader, prodding laggards and increasing financial aid to convince reluctant governments to set aggressive climate goals, such as reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.
Governments worldwide have fresh memories of US climate reversals, such as President George W. Bush’s repudiation of the Kyoto Protocol and the Trump administration's Paris Agreement withdrawal. Some with the questions of, 'What is, four or eight years from now, going to stop another Republican president from withdrawing again?'
To counter those fears, European officials and the NDC Partnership — a club of 65 countries that pool knowledge and resources to help meet Paris Agreement commitments — say Kerry will need to lead through action at home. The first test will be how fast the US is prepared to cut its own emissions by 2030.
Another signal of a long-term change in US policy would be passing legislation to create an emissions cap-and-trade system, which has support from some Republicans.
Though words alone won’t be enough, officials are still counting on strong American rhetoric from Kerry. Some want to see Kerry pushing and empowering and encouraging other states to take stronger climate action.
The Biden administration plans to roll out a total of 53 executive actions over the next 10 days, many of which will directly undo Mr Trump’s policies.
Each day will have a particular theme. Thursday’s executive orders will focus on addressing the Covid crisis. Friday’s seek to provide economic relief.
The president reiterated that much of what he wants to do for the country will require working with Congress. They are gonna need legislation for a lot of the other things they need to do.
Too early to assess...I just want to say, Goodbye Trump, Hello Biden!
