Gombak Setia Election Petitioner Claims Rm150 Given To Voters
The petitioner behind an election petition to overturn Perikatan Nasional’s victory in Gombak Setia claimed that RM150 was given to several voters in the constituency that saw PN’s candidate Muhammad Hilman Idham clinch the seat.
According to a copy of the election petition linked to the Selangor polls a few months ago, registered voter Mohd Shaffie Omar alleged the existence of RM150 inducement being given out to voters at Kompleks Sukan Sinamax in Sri Gombak between Aug 4 and 5.
The 40-year-old petitioner also claimed that RM150 was given to voters at Lot 2634, Sungai Chinchin Pinggiran 5, Kampung Sungai Chinchin in Kuala Lumpur, on Aug 9.
He contended that the offence - per Section 32(c) of the Election Offences Act 1954 - was perpetrated to sway constituents to vote for Hilman.
Via the petition sighted by Malaysiakini, Shaffie seeks an order to overturn Hilman’s electoral victory in Gombak Setia on Aug 12, costs, and any other relief deemed fit by the court.
In a statement today, Hilman (above) announced that he was ready to answer against the election petition set for a 10-day hearing before Election Court judge Abdul Wahab Mohamed from Dec 11.
“I am confident and ready to face the challenge presented via the election petition,” said Hilman, whose legal team is headed by former judicial commissioner Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud.
Law firm Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak is acting for Shaffie.
In the state polls on Aug 12, Hilman won the Gombak Setia seat with 30,299 votes, defeating BN’s Megat Zulkarnain Omardin (30,241 votes) and independent candidate Mohamed Salim Mohamed Ali (1,076 votes).
