(AP pic)PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated his criticism of Putrajaya’s settlement with Goldman Sachs over its role in the 1MDB scandal, describing it as premature and flawed.
This comes following the conviction of former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng last week, after conspiring to violate an anti-corruption law to help loot hundreds of millions of dollars from 1MDB.
“On Goldman Sachs’ apparent involvement in this ‘scam’, I reiterate my position that the settlement reached between the Malaysian government and Goldman Sachs in 2020 was premature and failed to consider the losses that Malaysians will continue to bear,” he said in a Facebook post today.
He added that although Ng had been convicted of a crime in the 1MDB case, it would be dishonest to claim that justice has been upheld.

“The statements of the witnesses throughout this trial only revealed faults and the roles many have played in this ‘scam’.
“Senior Goldman Sachs officials involved in the 1MDB scandal cannot escape their negligence as well as the damage and losses caused to Malaysia.”
Ng, 49, was accused of taking US$35.1 million in kickbacks to help Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) steal US$2.7 billion from 1MDB.
He was charged with three counts of conspiracy and faces up to 30 years in prison if he is convicted on all of them.
Anwar said there had been many assurances by the authorities that Jho Low and his gang will be arrested but so far nothing had happened.
“They were moving freely in Malaysia for many years until a few days before the last general election.”
He questioned the number of missed opportunities to bring these “conspirators” to justice.
“I will not remain silent as long as these people do not appear in court in Malaysia. We want justice for Malaysians,” he said. - FMT
