Gerakan vice-president Datuk Baljit Singh says the party proposes that the government consider establishing an RCI to investigate and solve once and for all the shortcomings affecting the Royal Malaysian Police. - NSTP/File picGEORGE TOWN: Gerakan has urged the government to consider establishing a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate and solve shortcomings affecting the police force.
Gerakan vice-president Datuk Baljit Singh said recent events had caused much consternation among Malaysians, especially due to revelations made by former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador and several others who once served as top cops in the country.
"I have called for the top brass in the Royal Malaysian Police to be given a free hand to clean up the force and restore its image as a professional, efficient and trustworthy unit working to protect and serve the people.
"However, there have been numerous allegations from political interference to cartels and underworld syndicates pulling the strings in the Malaysian police. These allegations cannot remain unanswered or uninvestigated. The claims against the police force have become the talk of town.
"There is frustration everywhere you go as people talk about the police, different camps in the force as revealed by Abdul Hamid and also dirty cops working in cahoots with syndicates.
"As such, Gerakan proposes that the government consider establishing an RCI to investigate and solve once and for all the shortcomings affecting the Royal Malaysian Police," he said today.
According to Baljit, just when he thought things could not get any worse for the force, viral messages are already being circulated about a clean, trustworthy and diligent cop who is going to be sidelined.
He said the messages involved none other than Johor police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, who was proposed by Abdul Hamid to take over as head of Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
"However, instead of becoming CID chief, the viral messages indicates Ayob is going to be put into cold storage by being appointed as the Police Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) head.
"Abdul Hamid did not mince his words when he stated that Ayob should move up and take over the CID. He had said that was the proposal to enable Ayob to continue to progress in his efforts to curb crime in this country. He had also said that Ayob has been exemplary all this while and that everyone was rooting for him and people liked him.
"I am praying hard that the viral messages about Ayob being overlooked for the CID post and appointed as JIPS head are proven to be untrue.
"The public needs to have confidence in the force and what better way to do that than appointing Ayob as the CID head as proposed by the former IGP himself," he added. - NST
