Police Call Up Anwar For Statement Over Leaked Phone Call
Lawyer Sankara N Nair says he will accompany Anwar Ibrahim to Bukit Aman tomorrow.PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been summoned to Bukit Aman tomorrow morning to give a statement related to an audio clip that was purportedly of a telephone call between him and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Sources said Anwar has been told to be at the federal police headquarters at 10am and will be accompanied by his lawyer Sankara N Nair.
“It is most likely linked to the purported private conversation between the two leaders on Umno matters that was mysteriously recorded and viralled,” said one source.
Sankara when contacted confirmed that he would be accompanying Anwar to Bukit Aman but could not confirm if the interview would be about the audio clip.
The audio clip which went viral early this month was that of a conversation between two men with voices resembling those of Zahid and Anwar. They discussed matters related to the Umno general assembly last month.
On April 10, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said an investigation had been opened and the police would record statements from Zahid and Anwar. He said a copy of the audio recording had been sent to a forensic laboratory to determine its authenticity.
“We will try to settle the matter fast,” he reportedly said.
However, Sankara questioned the decision to commence an investigation. He said the audio clip was not a seizable offence and thus the police had no power to investigate. - FMT
