PETALING JAYA: The full promotional video for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) cost RM1.9 million and runs for 40 minutes, says tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing.
He was responding to Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) in the Dewan Rakyat today about the cost and production of the video aimed at promoting Malaysia as a top travel destination next year.
“(The production of) this promotional video went through the proper tender process, and all approvals were obtained from the finance ministry,” he said, adding that a teaser video had been provided to the ministry for free.
In addition to the full 40-minute video, he said, there are shorter videos focusing on individual states and catering to specific tourist interests.
“The full video is 40 minutes long and covers the whole country. We also have five different videos focusing on certain states.
“Sometimes, tourists only want to see videos about the states they plan to visit,” he said.
Tiong had given an assurance on Jan 9 that the full promotional video would highlight the unique elements of each state.
He said he had asked top ministry officials, including secretary-general Roslan Abdul Rahman, to “refine” the completed version.
“The video had to be structured properly so that foreign tourists won’t be confused by the distinct elements of each state. It shouldn’t jump abruptly from one scene to another,” he said.
The previously released teaser was criticised by Bersatu Youth and PAS Youth, who claimed it failed to adequately represent Malaysia’s Muslim majority.
They argued that the video focused too much on non-Muslim places of worship such as churches and temples.
The 41-second teaser video showcased various tourist attractions, including Central Market in Kuala Lumpur, the SkyBridge in Langkawi, Batu Caves in Selangor, Christ Church in Melaka, and several cultural performances. - FMT
