Why No Talk Of Dynasty When We Were Jailed Says Guan Eng

GEORGE TOWN: DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng hit out at critics of a “Lim dynasty,” saying there was no such talk when he and his father, veteran leader Lim Kit Siang, were detained during their political careers.
“He was imprisoned twice for his political beliefs and struggles for justice. But yet some make accusations against him of wanting to create a Lim dynasty,” said Guan Eng at a dinner to mark Kit Siang’s 84th birthday.
But when he went into detention, “no one mentioned a Lim dynasty,” Guan Eng said. Nor was there such talk when he himself was imprisoned.
Kit Siang was detained in 1969 and 1987 under the now-repealed Internal Security Act (ISA). Guan Eng too, was detained under the ISA in 1987, and later jailed for 18 months in 1998 on a sedition charge over an article about a 15-year-old girl allegedly raped by a politician. The sentence disqualified him as an MP and barred him from politics until 2008.
DAP has often been called the “Lim dynasty” by political rivals who point to the control over the party that Kit Siang and Guan Eng exercised from 1970 to 2022, and with Guan Eng’s sister Hui Ying now in national politics, being a deputy minister, and a party leader in Penang.
At last night’s dinner, Penang DAP chief Steven Sim praised Kit Siang as “not greedy,” by turning down ministerial roles in the past to let younger leaders thrive. - FMT
