Food On The Table Is What Counts Pkr S Hassan Reminds Govt
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim says Anwar Ibrahim has three years to avoid the fate of British PM Rishi Sunak.
(FMT) – Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim has reminded the government coalition that food on the table and a lower cost of living are what matter to a large segment of the people.
He said his party PKR and Pakatan Harapan must develop a proper narrative to bring to the middle-income and lower-income people if it wanted to secure their votes.
It must not merely be lip service, he said in a Facebook post after the government candidate was defeated at the Sungai Bakap by-election yesterday.
He said PKR has less than three years to prevent Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim from suffering the same fate as British prime minister Rishi Sunak whose Conservative party suffered a humiliating defeat at the UK general election.
Hassan said it was clear that the Sungai Bakap by-election was lost because of economic matters, such as the diesel subsidy scheme.
He said the people must be able to buy food at reasonable prices and experience a lower cost of living. “When inflation drops, and salaries improve, maybe then the B40 and M40 will be more cordial and back the PKR, PH and the unity government,” he wrote.
Hassan said the withdrawal of diesel subsidies left the people infuriated because the higher diesel price had led to an increase in the price of goods and cost of living.
Coming after the sales and service tax was increased to 8% from 6%, “no one in the world loves it when subsidies are removed and taxes are raised,” he said. “The PKR candidate for Sungai Bakap had to bear the brunt of it all.”
The candidate, Joohari Ariffin, representing Pakatan Harapan, was defeated by a 4,267 vote majority. He polled 10,222 votes while Abidin Ismail, the candidate from Perikatan Nasional and PAS, was elected after obtaining 14,489 votes.
