Don T Use Violence To Settle Salary Issues Sabah Minister Tells Workers

Sabah industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Phoong Jin Zhe said he was concerned over an incident where a group of workers resorted to violence to demand their salaries be paid.
The incident, caught on video, has gone viral on social media. The video shows a group of construction workers slapping and punching three men.
Ads by KioskedThe three men were injured, Phoong said. They were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment and police reports were lodged.
-ADVERTISEMENT-Ads by “All parties should not try to resolve such matters through violence as it will not lead to any solution. Both sides should sit down and communicate to reach a settlement,” he said in a statement.
Phoong said the incident took place at around 1.15pm yesterday at the Shinsung E&G office, within the SK Nexilis project site at the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP).
Shinsung E&G is a subcontractor for Hyundai Engineering, which is the main contractor of the SK Nexilis project for the building of a copper foil production factory at KKIP.
“The incident occurred due to delayed salary payment by Shinsung E&G. The original payment should have been made on April 5, but due to some internal reasons, the payment was postponed to April 18,” Phoong said.
He said the workers were disappointed by the delay in paying their salaries. They demanded immediate payment and became aggressive.
Ads by KioskedPhoong, who is also the chairman of KKIP, said he was closely monitoring the situation and had spoken to SK Nexilis and Hyundai Engineering, both of which had assured him that the salaries would be paid by tomorrow or Tuesday.
“KKIP CEO Lawrence G Kimkuan will have a meeting with SK Nexilis and related parties soon,” he said. - FMT
