Don T Give Incoming Mbs Excos Assemblymen Pensions Says Muda
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said scrapping the pension scheme for elected representatives would ensure that those who ran for election were not ‘driven by power, position or pension assurances’.PETALING JAYA: Muda has called for the scrapping of pensions for those elected assemblymen, including menteris besar and state executive councillors.
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said scrapping the pension scheme for these elected representatives would ensure that those who ran for election were not “driven by power, position or pension assurances”.
“Scrapping the pension scheme will ensure they are driven by a genuine commitment to serve the people and safeguard the future of the nation,” he said at a press conference.
The Muar MP said in some states, elected representatives were eligible for the pension scheme after serving a mere two or three years.
He described this as an injustice, pointing out that other people would have to work for decades to be eligible for it.
The former youth and sports minister also called for the existing pension scheme to be restructured to prevent overlaps, citing how certain politicians could enjoy multiple positions at a time.
In March, special functions minister Armizan Ali said in a Dewan Rakyat reply that an elected representative was entitled to receive multiple pensions based on their service, under various Acts, ordinances and enactments.
Muda’s call to scrap the pension scheme for the incoming menteris besar, exco members and assemblymen is part of its manifesto for the Aug 12 state polls.
Syed Saddiq described its pledges as proposals for the incoming state governments, saying Muda was aware that it would not be able to win enough seats to form the state administrations on its own.
Previously, he had said that Muda would only contest 10% of the 245 seats in the six state elections.
“We will localise our manifesto so that it can be utilised by all candidates. We will present ideas to elevate the status from a ‘developing state’ to an ‘advanced state’.” - FMT
