Did Pm Get Duped By A Fake Tiktok Video
The MCMC’s revelation that it wanted to get Perikatan Nasional chief Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement about a TikTok video in regards to a disputed claim that the latter defended fuel subsidies for foreigners has raised an important question.
Was Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim duped by a fake TikTok video?
Anwar had on Tuesday claimed in Parliament that Muhyiddin had defended giving fuel subsidies to foreigners, saying that they too contribute to the country.
He even chided an opposition MP for not being aware of the PN chief’s statement.
Muhyiddin denied this, and Anwar subsequently ordered the MCMC to launch a probe.

Muhyiddin YassinInitial checks by Malaysiakini did not find any record of such remarks by the Pagoh MP.
However, there was one TikTok video which alleged such remarks were made.
Signs of misinformation
The video reportedly posted on July 23 by the TikTok account Omgmymedia contained a purported article clipping with the headline “Warga asing berhak dapat subsidi. Kenapa Anwar nak tarik? Mereka tinggal di Malaysia bukan negara asing”. (Foreigners deserve to get subsidies. Why would Anwar remove it? They live in Malaysia, not a foreign country.)
The video also contains a caption with implied attribution to Muhyiddin, saying that foreigners also contributed to the economy.
The news clipping in the video did not state which media it was from, and Malaysiakini’s checks found no articles with that headline.
The way the information was presented is similar to how fake headlines are shared on social media.

The video and the TikTok account have since been deleted, although the video has been shared by other accounts, including on other social media platforms.
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari had on Tuesday night questioned whether this was Anwar’s source of information.
Fadhli had also characterised the TikTok account that originally posted the video as being full of disinformation aimed at PN.
“If Anwar referred to this video, it is very unfortunate, as he has a media team that is not careful.
