Defamation Suit May 13 For Mediation Between Hannah Yeoh Ex Igp
Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh and former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan are set to attempt mediation on May 13 to try to resolve the lawmaker’s defamation suit against the latter.
The former deputy women, family and community development minister’s civil action was over the former top cop’s 2020 speech, which purportedly contained an allegation linked to the ethnic unrest of May 13, 1969.
On Oct 29 last year, Yeoh and Musa agreed to attempt mediation to settle the defamation action.
When contacted by Malaysiakini today, counsel Lim Wei Jiet and Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz confirmed that May 13 (next month) had been set for online mediation between the plaintiff and defendant.
Lim acted for the DAP lawmaker while Khairul Azam represented the ex-top cop.
Meanwhile, Khairul Azam said that mediation was previously postponed because Yeoh was busy with the Johor state elections on March 12.
The civil suit is fixed for case management before the Kuala Lumpur High Court on May 17.
Yeoh filed the defamation suit on July 3, 2020, following Musa’s speech at a forum at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) earlier on Jan 30 that year.
It was reported that The police were investigating Musa over the speech.
The forum titled Wacana Isu Semasa Perjanjian Damai Hat Yai 1989: PKM Menyerah Diri? (The Hat Yai Peace Accords: Did the Communist Party of Malaya surrender?) was organised by UiTM’s Institute of Malay Rulers.
In his speech, Musa was alleged to have suggested that DAP had published a book over the purported role of the Malays behind the May 13 riots, among others.
According to a copy of the suit’s statement of claim, Yeoh claimed, among others, that the speech contained defamatory statements that are wholly untrue, disparaging, vexatious, spurious, fallacious and without basis. - Mkini
