Dead Inmate S Wife Frustrated At Cops Delay Despite Agc Order
The wife of a prison inmate who died under allegedly suspicious circumstances after being detained in February has yet to hear from the police, despite the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) instructing the completion of an investigation report.
S Rajeswari, the wife of M Manisegaran, said that while she was informed the AGC had instructed the police to investigate her husband’s “mysterious” death, she has not been contacted by the police.
“Seven days have already passed, (but) I still have not received any calls from the police,” she told Malaysiakini.
She expressed disappointment with what she described as the police’s irresponsible attitude.
Malaysiakini has contacted Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M Kumar for comments on the matter.
On Dec 6, the AGC said it had directed Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Unit for Deaths in Custody to complete its investigation into Manisegaran’s death as soon as possible.

S RajeswariIt said this is to ensure the case can be referred to the Coroner’s Court soon to identify the victim’s cause of death, after which the full investigation report can then be referred to the AGC.
Detention and death
Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Manisegaran, a 41-year-old lorry driver, died under allegedly suspicious circumstances after being detained at the Bandar Sunway police station in Petaling Jaya earlier this year.
Rajeswari, who asserted that her husband was detained for undisclosed reasons, also claimed that she was prohibited from entering the station, with police officers insisting she wait outside.
To her horror, however, she soon saw an ambulance arriving, carrying her husband into the vehicle on a stretcher. Her request to accompany her husband in the ambulance was allegedly denied by the police officers.
Nearly an hour later, an officer informed her that her husband had been taken to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). She was later told that her husband had died.
She also claimed that the doctor who performed the post-mortem on her husband, whom she said sustained injuries to his chest, broken teeth, and bleeding in his eyes, kept giving conflicting statements on Manisegaran’s death.
She added that the post-mortem report allegedly offered inconsistent explanations, including suggestions of a heart attack, drug use, and fluid in the lungs.
However, she said Manisegaran’s death certificate merely states that his cause of death was “pending further investigation”, which has made it difficult for the family to file insurance claims, with the police yet to issue a final death certificate.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo later called on the AGC to clarify allegations that the authorities failed to investigate Manisegaran’s death.
The senior lawyer, who is also the DAP chairperson, added that deaths under custody must be investigated, as stated under Section 334 of the Criminal Procedure Code. - Mkini
