Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng says people have lost their jobs, and businesses are severely affected by the MCO.PETALING JAYA: Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said he will be contributing three months’ allowances to assist those in need in his constituency.
Instead of following in the footsteps of ministers and deputy ministers who have pledged to contribute their salaries to a trust fund, he said he would keep his allowances and hand them out to those who seek help from him.
“I understand that a lot of people have lost their jobs and businesses are severely affected, with the MCO in place.
“To those in Kepong who are really in a hard place, do not hesitate to contact me. We will review every application we receive and prioritise those in dire need of help,” he said in a statement.
The three-term MP is among the first opposition leaders to donate part of their incomes for Covid-19 assistance.
Last year, DAP’s Teluk Intan MP and former deputy speaker Nga Kor Ming said he had pledged one month’s salary to buy face masks for medical staff at Teluk Intan Hospital and underprivileged communities.
Yesterday, all 11 Penang executive councillors pledged to give up their June salaries to the state Covid-19 fund. Other assemblymen in the state will give 30% of their June salaries to the fund.
Recently, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said all Cabinet members and deputy ministers would be giving up their three months’ salaries to a trust fund to fight Covid-19. They had also donated two months’ of their salaries last year for the same purpose.
State governments, including those in Johor, Perak and Kelantan, have also announced full or partial pay cuts for assemblymen in aid of Covid-19 relief. - FMT
